Oyster Mushrooms Dried Whole
A Pantry Staple for Deep, Savory Flavor
Mild US-grown oyster mushrooms with concentrated umami and a satisfying bite.
Why You'll Love It
What Do Oyster Mushrooms Taste Like?
Oyster mushrooms have a mild, delicate flavor with natural savory depth. Drying concentrates their umami character, giving them a richer flavor that can add complexity to soups, sauces, pasta, rice dishes, and more.
Because their flavor is not overwhelmingly earthy, oyster mushrooms pair easily with garlic, onions, butter, olive oil, soy sauce, ginger, herbs, cream sauces, and broths.
What Happens When They Are Rehydrated?
Dried oyster mushrooms readily absorb warm water or broth, softening into tender pieces with a pleasant, slightly chewy bite. They also take on the flavors of the liquid and seasonings used to prepare them.
The soaking liquid captures some of the mushrooms’ concentrated savory flavor. Strain it through a fine mesh strainer or filter, then use it in soup, risotto, gravy, sauce, or stock.
How to Rehydrate
-
Place the desired amount of dried oyster mushrooms in a bowl.
-
Cover completely with warm water or broth.
-
Keep the mushrooms submerged and soak for 15 to 30 minutes, or until tender.
-
Drain and gently press out excess liquid.
-
Slice or chop the mushrooms as needed for your recipe.
-
Strain and reserve the soaking liquid if desired.
For more flavor, rehydrate the mushrooms directly in vegetable, chicken, beef, or mushroom broth.
How to Cook
After rehydrating, sauté the oyster mushrooms in butter or olive oil over medium-high heat until heated through and lightly golden at the edges. Season them simply with salt, pepper, and garlic, or incorporate them directly into a larger recipe.
They can also be simmered in soups and stews, tossed into stir-fries, folded into creamy sauces, or added to rice and pasta dishes.
